Lip Fillers: Ultimate Guide & Tips
Full, plump, kissable lips are always in and if you wish for fuller lips, then lip fillers may be right for you.
Lip fillers can revitalize your smile by restoring or adding volume while contouring the lips and reducing fine lines around the mouth for a more youthful image.
Injecting lip fillers is an art as much as it is a science, and the team at the SKINovative Med Spa understands that the key to rejuvenating the lips is to maintain balance and proportions for a natural finish.
If you are considering getting lip fillers, then you have come to the right place. We put together answers to some of the most commonly asked questions for you.
Let’s get started…
What Are Lip Fillers?
Lip fillers are a popular procedure where a skilled medical professional will use an injection to ‘fill’ or plump your lips. These types of dermal fillers are made up of an ingredient called hyaluronic acid.
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in your body that helps you retain moisture and add volume. You have probably even seen this anti-aging superstar ingredient in moisturizers, serums, and other beauty products.
What Are the Benefits of Lip Fillers?
Lip fillers are all the rage right now, and with the many benefits, it is no surprise why.
First, you can customize the treatment to meet your exact needs. You can do both lips, only the bottom, or only the top. And you can add as little or as much volume as you like.
In the case that your lips are too thin, you can create natural-looking full lips. You can also contour your lips and remove fine lines around the mouth whether they may be the result of age or smoking; and even uplift the corners of the mouth which adds years to your smile.
Both women and men choose to get lip injections to combat common lip issues including:
- Restore or add volume
- Fix asymmetry
- Defining the lip line
- Balance upper and lower lip size
- Reduce wrinkles around the mouth
- Uplift the corners of the mouth
How Long Do Fillers Last?
Lip fillers are not a permanent solution. Our bodies naturally metabolize the hyaluronic acid formula over time. Most people will require maintenance treatments after 6-12 months.
This timing varies based on the person and also includes factors like lifestyle, the type of filler selected, and the areas of injection.
Do Lip Enhancement Treatments Hurt?
When done by a trained and certified injector, lip injections should not be too uncomfortable. The fillers actually contain lidocaine, which should kick-in almost immediately upon injection. You may feel a little prick or slight pressure at first.
Afterward, you will receive an ice pack to ice your lips for a few minutes, and then you will be free to resume your normal activities with fuller, kissable lips.
Are Lip Fillers Safe?
Yes, lip fillers have been approved by the FDA as safe and effective. It is essential to get lip enhancement treatments from trusted and certified medical practices such as SKINotive Med Spa.
Unskilled injectors often over inject. Too much filler solution leaves the lips out of proportion to the rest of the face. In many cases, a patient only needs a small amount of injection to achieve a rejuvenated, yet natural look.
What Are the Side Effects?
Yes. As with any injection, there may be slight swelling, redness, or bruising at the injection site. This is normal and will fade after just a few days.
If you have a history of getting cold sores, the procedure may trigger a flare-up. This can be mitigated by taking your cold sore medication for two days before treatment.
How Do You Prepare for a Lip Treatment?
Be sure to write down any questions you may have in advance, so you don’t forget them. At SKINovative we care about your desired results and want you to be entirely comfortable with any treatment before starting.
Bring pictures. It helps to bring a couple of pictures the perfect lips you wish to emulate to show what you are hoping to achieve with your results.
This will help the doctor understand your individual goals, and advise you on what complements your facial features the best.
Let your doctor know if you are taking blood thinners. Blood thinners can increase the likelihood of bruising. Also avoid Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Advil, Fish oils, and Vitamin E supplements for at least one week prior to treatment.
How Long Does Lip Enhancement Take?
Depending on how long it takes to answer your questions during the initial consultation, the lip enhancement treatment only takes up to 45 minutes.
Subsequent touch up treatments to maintain results will take approximately 15 to 20 minutes.
Are Lip Enhancement Results Immediate?
Yes. You will notice results immediately. Is it important to note that your lips may swell at first, and the swelling will subside between 1 and 2 days.
If you are getting your lips injected for an event, like a wedding, it is highly recommended to do so at least 5 days in advance.
Depending on the results you are hoping for, it is always better to err on the side of caution and do too little than too much, so it may take more than one treatment to the desired results.
What If I Don’t Like My Results?
In the rare case that you are dissatisfied with the appearance of your lip filler, you have the option to dissolve it with an enzyme called hyaluronidase.
Who Is A Candidate for Lip Fillers?
Both, adult women and men of all ages are choosing to get lip fillers. Lip fillers are for so much more than just plumping lips. They are used to plump thin lips, smooth lines around the lips (including smokers lines) and restore lost volume.
Bringing balance to your face with a lip filler can help you gain confidence and leave you feeling like the best version of yourself.
